Anti-Aging Q & A

How do hormones impact aging?

Anti AgingHormones are chemicals that travel through the bloodstream to start, slow, or regulate different bodily changes and functions. As we age, some hormone levels decrease, causing various emotional and physical changes.

Around age 35, women gradually begin to lose estrogen and progesterone, hormones that control menstrual cycle and fertility. Menopause occurs when women stop producing estrogen and progesterone entirely. Surgery to remove the ovaries or uterus — or both — and certain medical conditions may also cause premature menopause in women.

Men also undergo hormone-related changes with age. For men, the gradual decline of testosterone triggers “andropause” which comes with its own mental and physical changes.

Symptoms of hormone depletion include:

  • Depression
  • Erectile dysfunction in men
  • Hot flashes for women
  • Increased risk of heart problems
  • Low bone density
  • Loss of skin volume and elasticity
  • Mild incontinence
  • Memory Loss
  • Reduced sexual desire
  • Vaginal atrophy in women

What is saliva testing?

Current research shows a strong link between hormone levels in saliva and active hormones in your bloodstream. Doctors test hormones present in salivary ducts to determine how much is available in your body tissue.

Dr. McIlveen, Alyssa Jastrzebski, and Diane Moon use saliva hormone testing to determine if hormone replacement therapy is right for you. Saliva testing is a quick, convenient, and painless alternative to blood tests.

Your glands manufacture hormones which flow into the bloodstream attached to carrier proteins. A tiny amount of these hormones break loose and enter body tissue, including the brain, skin, and uterus. Hormone testing measures these “active” or “bioavailable” hormones.

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was introduced in the 1930’s to improve menopause symptoms. HRT supplements the body chemicals your body decreased or stopped producing.

Dr. McIlveen, Alyssa Jastrzebski, and Diane Moon treat patients with a variety of different HRT methods:

  • Creams and gels: applied to the skin
  • Patches: adhere to the skin
  • Pills: natural supplements and prescription medication
  • Pellets: inserted underneath the skin
  • Rings: inserted into the vagina
  • Suppositories: inserted directly into the body

HRT benefits include:

  • Balanced moods
  • Decreased body fat
  • Improved memory
  • Improved mental clarity
  • Increased energy levels
  • Increased sex drive

Dr. McIlveen, Alyssa Jastrzebski, and Diane Moon work with you to find the best HRT method to meet your needs. You can turn back time and regain energy and vitality with HRT. Call or click to schedule your HRT appointment today.
